What a Vertical Foundation Crack Looks Like
Vertical cracks have a few telltale characteristics:
- Runs relatively straight up and down, sometimes with a slight diagonal
- Often appears near a corner of the foundation
- May be slightly wider at the top than the bottom
- Usually shows up within the first year or two after construction

Why Vertical Cracks Form
Most vertical cracks come from one of these:
- Normal concrete curing shrinkage — by far the most common cause, and typically not a structural concern
- Minor soil settlement beneath a section of the footing
- Temperature-related expansion and contraction over repeated seasons
This is different from a horizontal foundation crack, which is caused by lateral soil pressure pushing against the wall and is generally treated as more serious. A vertical crack on its own is rarely a sign the wall is actively failing.
