Concrete Cracks: What They Mean and When to Worry
Not every crack in a driveway, slab, or foundation wall is a red flag. Concrete cracks for plenty of ordinary reasons, but some patterns point to a structural problem that will keep getting worse. Foundation Solutions inspects the crack, traces it back to its cause, and recommends a fix as part of a broader foundation repair evaluation when needed.
Cosmetic Cracks vs. Structural Cracks
The type of crack tells you a lot about whether it’s a concern:
- Hairline shrinkage cracks — thin, web-like, appear soon after the concrete cures. Usually cosmetic.
- Straight, vertical cracks — often from normal expansion and contraction with temperature changes.
- Stair-step or diagonal cracks — typically a sign of soil movement beneath the slab or foundation.
- Horizontal cracks, or cracks with an offset (one side higher than the other) — a stronger indicator of a sinking foundation
If the crack is in a slab rather than a wall, see our cracked concrete slab page for more detail specific to slab cracking.
Why Concrete Cracks
Concrete crack causes range from routine to structural:
- Normal curing shrinkage as the concrete dries and settles into place
- Freeze-thaw cycles that stress the surface over repeated seasons
- Soil settlement beneath the slab or footing, shifting support unevenly
- Poor original mix or installation that leaves the concrete under-strength
- Water and drainage issues that erode or soften the soil below
When the cause is settlement, our concrete lifting service raises the slab back toward level instead of just patching the crack.
When Is a Concrete Crack Serious?
Most hairline cracks are nothing to worry about. Have a professional take a look if you notice:

FAQs
About Concrete Cracks
Are All Concrete Cracks a Sign of Foundation Problems?
No. Many cracks are simply from normal shrinkage as concrete cures, or from temperature changes. Cracks that are wide, growing, stair-stepped, or paired with sticking doors and windows are the ones worth having inspected.
Can Concrete Cracks Be Repaired Without Replacing the Slab?
In most cases, yes. Concrete lifting and polyurethane foam jacking address the settlement causing the crack and restore the slab's level, without the cost of a full replacement.
How Do I Know if a Crack Is Getting Worse?
Mark the ends of the crack with a pencil and the date, and check back in a few weeks. If it has visibly lengthened, widened, or developed an offset, it's a good time to have it professionally inspected.

Testimonials
I don't even know where to start with this review. From the first contact to the end of the job, Ryan and his crew were amazing - professional, knowledgeable, courteous, tidy and clean and very respectful of the impact the job had on me as the homeowner. The job was major, but I felt confident with the information that Ryan and his crew shared with me each step of the project. Since they are specialists, they are very busy so it took a while from start to finish but worth the wait! I could not be more pleased. They get an A+++ from me.

We had a consultation with a very knowledgeable engineer (Collin) who's extremely patient to answer questions and concerns we had. After a thorough walkthrough and measurements, it turned out the area which we thought might be problematic with leveling is only centralized and minuscule, not foundation-related. I'd like to thank Foundation Solutions for this engineer's detailed explanations, professional knowledge and recommendations. At the end, we acquired peace of mind and would highly recommend this company to anyone that may be seeking help with foundation related issues. If we are doing any addition/expansion of our house, we would definitely get in touch again for securing our foundation.

Kyle and the team are awesome! A corner of our foundation has a horizontal crack and when we go out for a quote, many companies explained how serious it is and give us a high estimation. Kyle came onsite and did a detailed inspection, explain why it crack, and how to properly fix it. Then few days later, gave us a reasonable estimate, and we decided to go with the service, they handled the permit, came to fix it in a day and did all the final inspection and passed, we have a smooth experience on the fix. My family are super happy with their service and already recommend to friends in case they need some work in the foundation.
